Many persons share your attitude.

Some deaths are designated as a Coroner's Case. For example if there was strong suspicion of foul play. Many unsuspected deaths outside the hospital fall in this category, but it varies from state to state. But, if a death falls into the category of a Coroner's Case, the coroner makes the decision whether or not to perform an autopsy.

Many times a doctor will request permission for an autopsy, especially if cause of death is unknown. Remember, the cause of death is frequently associated with hereditary influences, and surviving family members may benefit from the knowledge gained.

I agree that the concept is grim, but I personally would want to be autopsied if it would benefit my survivors or advance medical knowledge. I would not consider it abuse.

Any unattended death depending on age, health history and circumstances requires an autopsy by the state or county that death occured in. It doesn't matter if family members refuse it or not. If the corner or physican is not comfortable to sighning the death certificate an autopsy has to be performed in order to reveal cause of death. This way, all legal realms have been covered so if the death turns out to be other than natural causes, the courts have their evidence and physicans still have their license.

However, if the state or county where death occured doesn't feel the need of an autopsy, the family can request one and it has to be done. However, this expense comes out of the families own pocket and on average autopsies run in price between 1,300 to 5,000 dollars.

In any case of death where the cause of death is suspicious (like a 20 year old dying in his sleep, or a 13 year old that stops breathing, or a healthy 50 year old dying...) an autopsy must be performed. It will also happen if the cops rule the death suicide, etc. A medical examiner will view the body and check it out - and questions and you have no choice - that body will be autopsied. (Also if someone dies in a hospital or public place, autopsied to make sure the cause of death - ensures no wrongful death suits in the future and makes sure no one gets away with murder...)

Autopsies are not mandatory in this country unless there is evidence of foul play. The youtube site doesn't open up with your link.
