Crude, violent and a bigot. Not great, no. He was clever at times and an absolute opportunist. Those are all traits that a certain layer of the population admires.

Andrew Jackson definitely earns mixed reviews. Curiously, historians currently rank him as number 8, but he was very popular in the Southern United States in the years following his victory against the British in the Battle of New Orleans in the War of 1812. My family tree, for example, has numerous examples of baby boys named Andrew Jackson. Jackson's election as President is also credited with implementing Jacksonian Democracy, meaning that for the first time the common man without personal property was allowed to vote. Jackson also repaid the totality of the federal debt.

Very much on the minus side, however, Jackson forcibly removed the Native American tribes living east of the Mississipi to Indian Territory in direct violation of a Supreme Court ruling in what is now referred to as "The Trail of Tears". He was also infamous for appointing his cronies to influential posts.
