ACWORTH, Ga. (Nov. 19) - Three boys ages 8 and 9 were being held Monday in a detention center on charges of kidnapping and raping an 11-year-old girl in the woods near a suburban apartment complex, officials said.

The alleged attack happened Thursday and the girl's mother reported it to authorities Sunday, Acworth police Capt. Wayne Dennard said.

"The juvenile victim stated that an 8-year-old boy and two 9-year-old boys that she had been playing with earlier pulled her into a wooded area, where one of the boys raped her," Dennard said.

The three boys were charged with rape, kidnapping, false imprisonment and sexual assault, Dennard told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Their names were being withheld because of their age.

Prosecutors have not decided whether to try the suspects as adults.

"That decision hasn't been made," said Kathy Watkins, a spokeswoman for the Cobb County District Attorney's office. She had no further comment.

Calls to the Acworth Police Department were not returned Monday morning.

Acworth is 30 miles northwest of Atlanta in the city's fast-growing outer suburbs.

Is it legal in the US to try 8/9 children as adults? What about the possibility of reforming these children who obviously have very serious mental health and social issues.
You've got to wonder about the parents of these little SOB's.

Horrific but I do not put the blame entirely on the 8 and 9 yr olds.
They did I believe by copying films or TV shows.
Although in English Law since 1993 "A boy under 14 is now capable in law of sexual intercourse - Sexual Offences Act 1993, Sections 1 and 2 (Archbold 20-23)" -- I still think that charging 8 and 9yr olds with that serious offence is taking it a bit far.
Sensationalism and exaggeration !! - I will give you an example. In a primary school in north London three 8 and 9 yr olds were accused by the school's staff of "EXPOSING THEMSELVES" to passengers in trains passing very near the school. The parents were horrified and worried. I found out from my son (9 yr old) who was not involved but saw what happened that "exposing themselves" which people automatically think means exposing the genitals, was not more than ONE of the three little boys PARTIALLY pulling down his trousers and showing his bottom with his underpants on, at a passing train and the other two boys laugh !! This is completely different from "THREE SCHOOLS EXPOSED THEMSELVES TO PASSING TRAINS" -- Besides we see on our TY screen adults doing that all the time !!
No wonder governments constantly remind newspapers of the importance of responsible reporting !
So I would take that report with a pinch of salt. I would like to hear the whole evidence. There is no way I can believe that those kids meant what they were doing or even knew what they were doing. Apart from that... an 11- year old girl would have to be pretty small to be allowed to be submittd by smaller 8 yr olds.

I think we should remember that this is just the beginning of this potential case. There are many, many details that still need to be investigated and probably many complex issues will come to light. At this point, these boys have been ALLEGED to have committed this crime. If it in fact is true, I would guess they too had experienced abuse at some point in their young lives to carry out such an act. If this story holds, I think it is highly sad for ALL the children involved.

Trying them as adults would be ridiculous...but I have no problem with the crimes they were charged with.

Of course, it makes you wonder about the parents, but the bottom line is these kids committed a very serious crime and must face the consequences.
