John (24 December 1166 – 18/19 October 1216) reigned as King of England from 6 April 1199, until his death. He succeeded to the throne as the younger brother of King Richard I (known in later times as "Richard the Lionheart"). John acquired the nicknames of "Lackland" (Sans Terre in French) for his lack of an inheritance as the youngest son and for his loss of territory to France, and of "Soft-sword" for his alleged military ineptitude.[1] He was a Plantagenet or Angevin king.

The nickname Lackland referrs to his brother John in reference to the fact that he was the last son in a large family and his father, King Henry, had no more land to give.
Richard the Lionheart was widely renouned for his battle proweness.

He wasn't. Both these nicknames were given to John, his younger brother, who succeeded Richard as king.
John was called Lackland at one time because he was the youngest son and hadn't received as much in the way of land and titles as his brothers. He was called Softsword because he kept getting defeated in battle in France.

I think you mean his Brother, John? John, Lackland (1199-1216 AD) ... As the fourth child, inherited lands were not available to him, giving rise to his nickname, Lackland. Soft-Sword? Now there you've got me! John was not exactly succesful in his campaigns in France, so that's where he may have earned it!
