Last night when I got out of work I started my car and warmed it up. It has snowed and I was defrosting the car. I noticed the battery light was on and was flashing. The battery was reading a low charge. After I drove a few miles the battery kicked in to normal charge. This morning the light did not come on. I have an appointment later on in te week but want to know if other problems other than an alternator can cause this. The battery is only two years old.

sounds like water from melting snow got on the alternator9IN IT). HAD THIS HAPPEN TO ME UP HERE IN CENTRAL NY. EASIEST WAY TO CHECK ALTERNATOR(OLD REDNECK WAY) is to start the vehicle and with no assessories on unhook the battery terminals.b sure they dont teach each other or thje cars metal. if the car shuts off alternator is bad. if not then turn on all assessories and repaet test. still doesnt stall alternator is good.could also be the bearing in the alternator is weak and the extra drag from the cold weather( makes cars turn over slower)is making the alternator lag at idle.

First of all DO NOT start your car and unhook the battery terminal. With todays computors you could cost yourself serious money if you short it out. Take your car to any Auto Zone or Advance, Pep Boys and they will check your battery and alternator free of charge. This will eliminate taking suggestions blindly from people that have no way of even giving you an educated guess with out actually looking at your car.

Carry out 2 simple checks.1 check the electrolyte strength.using a hydrometer.2 start up your engine and check the charging rate,14.5 volts is approximate voltage to be given out by a good alternator. The slight drop in temprature does lower the acid strength. If it is low you can obtain acid to top it up.Another thing to try is to charge the battery using a charger .Also adjust your drive belt sufficiently to drive the alternator with out slipping.Hope you get to the bottom of your problem. Also check the connections on your battery for good connection.
