How old are you?
Depending on your age, you might be ready for Jane Austen. Some books by Austen are harder than others to read. As an English teacher, I don't like to put an "appropriate age" on books or classical authors such as Austen, unless the book contains inappropriate (dirty) language or situations. I think you are pretty safe with Jane Austen.
If you are able to read the material, talk to your mom and see if you can convince her that you are mature enough to read the book you want to read.
If you are really interested mostly in classic literature, there are several places to start. The suggestions that you have gotten already are great. I would also make this suggestion: search for a translation of classical works. There are versions that have been re-written and translated from the original onto a children's reading level.
Best of luck and keep reading!

Hmmmm. If my mother had told me I was too young.....
Well, I guess I would have started hiding what I was reading from her.
Fortunately, I had enough siblings that she was just thankful I was home and being quiet.
Since your mother thinks you are too young for Jane Austen, steer clear of Lady Chatterly's Lover, too. You might want to read 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and The Mysterious Island by Verne. Or you could try Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott. Lots of adventure and no sex, although Ivanhoe has men lusting after pretty girls.

I wish you would of mentioned how old you are..I remember going through the sames thing with my mother over Romeo and Juliet...when the movie came out...and it was really no big deal. I remember sneaking to read books that I wanted to read. No one should ever stop someone from reading in my opinion.....is the book in your school library? I bet it is...problem solved.

Sounds gay, but you should respect your parents right to tell you your not ready. There are MILLIONS of books you could read, why so compelled to read what your not supposed to? Sounds like an excuse to be rebellious?
