I started with instructional books for children! They have very clear instructions that do not assume any prior knowledge and use plenty of visual aids. I picked it up at a local JoAnn's. I have also found the books "Knitting for Dummies" and "Crocheting for Dummies" very easy to use. I was not as big of a fan of the one that combines the two though. All of the ones I found start you off with projects such as scarfs, blankets, and sweaters. Check out the library, you can request any of the books in their collection to be sent to the branch nearest you, you can look through them until you find the one that makes sense to you, and they don't cost anything! Then, when you find the sources you can't live without you can buy them for yourself.

I recently started making helmet-type hats and narrow scarves with a knitting loom. I found the website LoomRoom.com to be helpful (includes directions, patterns and pictures), but just Google "knitting loom' to find lots of other sites. You probably can't make sweaters with the loom, but I hope you'll find "looming" as fun as I do.

Go to knittinghelp.com. They have videos on all the basics in both English (right hand) and Continental (left hand)knitting. They show everything really close up and give lots of tips.

Amazon has a great dvd out there by a lady called Nici Mcnally called THE COMPLETE BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO KNITTING. Its only like 11 dollars and its how I learned. It has great up close shots of the stitches, and the dvd pauses itself when it wants to give you time to work on something. The dvd also comes with a booklet that has great beginner projects and you can go out to her website www.yarnbag.com for other free patterns.
