They're both so good: I would say if I was having some friends over to have a movie-trio weekend, it would be Pirates. More action and I think on the whole, more people would enjoy it.
But if I was by myself, it would be Lord of the Rings. I just really like the movies. The books, however, I didn't really get into as much.

Lord of the rings because it was written a while back by a guy who created everything about middle earth. Pirates is just a money making series of films that has no following of fans. Lord of the Rings has hardcore fans, just like star wars.
