im supposed to divide the problem below, but i cant figure out how to solve it.

(3x – 2)(x - 4) – (x - 4)(6 – 5x) / (4 – x)(8x – 1)

=[3x^2 -14x+8 -(-5x^2+26x-24)]/[(4-x)(8x-1)]

= [8x^2-40x+32]/[(4-x)(8x-1)]

= 8x^2 -5x +4)/[(4-x)(8x-1)]

=(8x-1)(x-4)/[(4-x)(8x-1)]

= -1

this was my teachers response, but i cant figure out how to factor out the GCF.
Don't FOIL in the numerator. Factor out the GCF instead. What do you get?

I assume you mean
( (3x – 2)(x - 4) – (x - 4)(6 – 5x) ) / (4 – x)(8x – 1)

Let's rip that (x-4) out of there, first. Fiddle the denominator:

((3x -2)(x-4) - (x-4)(6-5x)) / (x-4)(1-8x)

((3x-2) - (6-5x)) / (1-8x)

(8x-8) / (1-8x)

factor out x-4 in the numerator
do you know that in the denominator you have 4-x
that is actually same as -(x-4) there fore (x-4)/-(x-4)=-1
you get [ (3x-2)-(6-5x)]all over -(8x-1)
the numerator becomes 8x-8
denominator is -(8x-1)
the answer is (8x-8)/(1-8x)

(8x^2-40x+32) / (4-x)(8x-1)
8(x^2-5x+4) / (4-x)(8x-1)
8(x-4)(x-1) / (4-x)(8x-1)
-8(4-x)(x-1)/(4-x)(8x-1)
(4-x) cancels out
8(1-x)/(4-x)(8x-1)
This is as far as you can go.
