Follow these steps to do computer maintenance.
- run Disk Cleanup - from the System Tools section of Accessories
- Open My Computer, then Right Click on your C drive and pick PROPERTIES. Pick the Tools section and click on CHECK NOW. Check both tests, and YES, let it run after you restart. You see, CHECK DISK will ensure that your hard drive is working completely. This test might take an hour or so.
- run DEFRAG - from the System Tools section of Accessories.
Keep your anti-virus solution up to date, and run a full scan weekly.
Keep your anti-spyware solution up to date, and run a full scan every few days. I recommend the free SpyBot Search & Destroy that you can get from http://www.download.com
Do all of this regularly, and your computer will run better.
Good luck and Happy Computing!

If your virus/spyware free, there are a couple things you can do get your computer working faster. If you using your computer for normal stuff and not gaming. You don't always need more RAM you just need to perform a few maintenance task.
First, if you haven't cleaned your registry in a while. This is necessary. Your registry holds all the information regarding updates, installs, un-installs etc. Each one of those events produces a key. That key needs your PC's resources and free space. So, if you clean your registry, you make more resources available for speed. Do a registry scan if you got more than 20 errors you should clean it.
http://www.delete-computer-history.com/what-is-the-best-registry-cleaner.html
2. Clear your Windows cache files, this is your temporary file. It can grow up to a large volume and stop your computer from using RAM properly. In a sense slow it down by preventing it from using free space. Here is how:
1. Quit Internet Explorer, Firefox, or any other web browser
2. Click Start, click "Control Panel", and then double-click "Internet Options".
3. On the General tab, click "Delete Files" under Temporary Internet Files.
4. In the Delete Files dialog box, click to select the "Delete all offline content" check box , and then click OK.
5. Click OK.
3. Manage your startups. Your excess CPU usage is due to too many programs running in the background. You can cut these to barebones by alter your msconfig. Here is how:
1. Open your Start menu.
2. Click Run
3. In the command screen type "msconfig.exe"
4. In the "system configuration utility",click either "service" or "startup" tab
5. Uncheck all programs that your are no longer using.
6. Click "OK"
Other great tip is increasing your virtual memory to simulate more RAM. This will give you a bit more resources for multiple program use or CPU heavy programs. Check the link to alter your virtual memory spec.
Hope this link helps. Shows you how to do everything step by step. You should get a least 60-120% more resources and speed
if you follow the tips.

I think it depends on the speed of the sites you try to browse. Pressing back button IE tries to retrieve the data from the previous site (yes, again!!)
If you want to try Opera browser it is easily solve because opera will not retrieve the data from server when you press back button. It will use the existing data you have downloaded.
Also, some internet security software will slow down the speed of browsing if you enable "web scanner" option.
If you have use some tools that add blacklist to the hosts file, it might cause long delay if the list is very long. (imagine scanning through a 3mb text file each time you browse x.x)
At last, try clean up your computer temporary files using free tools like ccleaner and then defrag your pc. It also helps speed up.
Hope it helps, gl :)

another thing to use that may use up space on your computer to open websites is open start>click run> type "prefetch" in the box>when it opens go to "files" at the top of the window>scroll down to "select all" then under files click delete>it will ask you if you want to delete everything say yes and then close window.what prefetch does is it makes a list of every website you ever opened since you got your computer, so the next time you open the website it will open faster, cleaning the list will make it so that your computer doesnt have to go through 3,000 websites say if your computer is old to find the website, and there maybe sites you dont use anymore give it a try its harmless
