I will answer by saying this...

I moved to Houston in 1988. Later that year were two huge drug busts. The first was a heroin bust worth an estimated street value of 65 million dollars. The second was a cocaine bust with an estimated street value of about 50 million dollars. The drug realted crimes percentage fell dramatically over an eight year period. The jails were beginning to empty, and many were cleaning up there acts. After an 8 year slow down in drug crimes... there was a mysterious resurgence of heroin and cocaine into the houston area. The jails began to fill again, and drug related crimes were on the rise.
The Truth? Those busts were staged, and the dope was sat on for eight years because of a public outcry to clean up the neighborhoods. When things began to get too quiet, they pulled it out of storage and put it back on the streets.
Viet-Nam... Laotian drug cartels trafficking Herion had access to secret roads leading into Vietnam. They were paid to guide our boys in using these roads, and in return they recieved our help getting their product across the border as well, complete with helicopter support and armed escort. Unfortunately their main customer base was American soldiers (and our boys became addicted to heroin en mass).
I would not be the slightest bit surprised if Iran paid in cocaine... it would explain all the coke going into houston not too long afterwards.

I don't know how they paid for their weapons, but the thought of the U.S. government selling arms in exchange for a political win makes me ill, whether the payment was in money, in cocaine, or in mangoes.

I keep reading about the poppy farmers in Afghanistan. Oh, the poor poppy farmers! This is the only way, they say, that they can make ends meet. In the meantime, unemployed Americans are losing their jobs. Mortgage foreclosures are putting families on the streets. Illegal Aliens are peopling our states and taking over jobs. Uh, they don't grow coca plants in Nicaragua, and the cocaine trade never went thru there, so there's no logical connection there.
