Many have given the correct answer but do you understand how? Assume a real life problem. Let us say a negative number means that you have a debt (in dollars, say) and a positive number implies that you have credit. If you have to take awy -11 from 6, it simply means that your debt of $11 is being annulled. When will this happen? Only when somebody pays you $11. Thus, you will have 6+11 with you now.

okay it is 6 minus negative 11. When there is two negative, you change it to a positive. just remember this. Positive mean to love and negative mean to hate. the problem above is 6-(-11)
so you haver two subtraction sign. if you use the hate and love. it is hate to hate( 6-(-11)) and so it became a positive. Instead of subtracting, you add. 6+11=17. Let me do another one. 11+(-6)
So now you get love to hate. That is bad so you're going to subtract. 11-6=5

Hi,
The rule for subtraction of numbers with unlike signs is as follows: Change the sign of the number being subtracted and proceed as in addition. So, we do this:
6+(+11) = 17
