Yes, people are going to say there are discrimination laws against this, but whats the reality? I have a hispanic last name and never get called back when I leave my full name on answering machines of apartment building owners. I had a terrible time finding an apartment that I wanted, so what is it like for black people?

I think it's tough for a lot of people, regardless of skin color, to get apartments. A lot of times it's more so who you know, especially if there are waiting lists. 2D

I am mixed and I have never had a problem getting an apartment or renting a home, nor do I know any one who has. I think it all really depends what part of the country you live in and also your tone when you are leaving messages. If you sound professional and serious they are going to take you that way, but if you sound like you don't have a clue what you are doing they aren't going to call you back. I don't think it has anything to do with your name .

Probably the same. It was the same for me, when I was a single white female looking for a place. Sleeping on friends' couches just doesn't cut it!

I think a lot of landlords have had bad experiences in general, with any nationality or sex, it just makes them very nervous about letting anyone on their property, which sucks for people who are hard working and honest, who need that apartment!

It's against the law to discriminate, but around here people who are on welfare have a hard time finding apartments, especially if they have children. Single welfare mothers have the toughest time of all.

I have not, but I am sure that it happens from time to time. If you think that it is b/c of your ethicity, you should contact the Dept of Housing and Urban Development ("HUD" for short) or your state human rights agency.

you'd be better off GOING and LOOKING at apts...most people don't get call backs...what makes you think someone will call you back, just because you left a message ??? maybe the owners don't have time to deal with messages..
