My teacher this year does not like us using "In conclusion...", "In all..." to start our concluding paragraph. Can anyone give any tips on how to effectively start a conclusion.

Restate your thesis in a more conclusive way. So, if your thesis was "Thus, online forums like YahooAnswers have offered a quicker and more effective means to communicate and share information"........ then start your conclusion with something like "Ultimately, it is apparent that communication and information exchange has greatly been improved by online forums, such as YahooAnswers".

Then continue on to the rest of your conclusion, giving a brief run through of why and a closing statement.

How To Start A Conclusion

One of the best ways to write a conclusion is to look at your own introductory para (that is if you wrote a good one)and the question itself.

For example, if the question is "Do you agree or disagree with Capital Punishment"? you can write a conclusion like...

I strongly disagree with Capital Punishment. Based on the explanations that I have given above, one can see that, many times, minorities do not often get fair treatments from most of the Jury, and thus, they could be mistakenly ruled as guilty. In addition, it is also curel and unfair. Thus, I believe Capital Punishment should be abolished.

Hope this helps.

many teachers provide guidelines and some are open to questions about language in an essay for them.

Is it acceptable to say ?

I began by telling you [what I was going to prove/my views on ____. ]
I believe my arguments --[without the numbers]- 1] topic of first argument 2] topic of 2ND argument 3] topic of 3RD argument -- have achieved this objective or have proved my contention or have proved what i thought was completely wrong.

Also an essay's conclusion can be just an extension of the thoughts you have about the topic and sum up what you have learned.
Look at Steve Martin's essay on the page below for this type of ending.

Study Skills, Essay Writing.

As the essay paper has evolved it has become more demanding with much more emphasis on posing questions which allow candidates to display the higher order skills. Professor Roy Wilkinson of Sheffield University has identified a pyramid of skills which A level examinations try to test.

It is always best to restate your thesis statement in your concluding paragraph. I have seen some essays that use "In essence," for their concluding paragraph.

Repeat the starting question in different words, that's what my teachers made me do :)
