Hillary Clinton has said her global warming solution would cost $150 billion over 10 years and that one-third would be financed from the establishment of a $50 billion Strategic Energy Fund paid for by oil companies (which you and I would pay for it in the form of ever higher and higher fuel prices): http://www.myfoxla.com/myfox/pages/News/Detail?contentId=4968958&version=7&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=TSTY&pageId=3.2.1

To all of you blaming "big oil" for higher gas prices here's an answer for you. Just get Congress to pass laws prohibiting oil companies from bidding more than $50/bbl for crude (half the current market price). That would immediately lower the price of fuel by 50% (and reduce the amount of crude the US is able to buy on the world market to zero).

Not to mention higher taxes for her Universal Health Care Plan, gov't sponsored 401k Matching Plan, and $5000 for every baby born in the U.S.

Not to mention all her plans will include illegal immigrants.

Considering how much the oil companies have ripped us off for over the years--they should pay for it. And not by hiking prices. They should be placed under price regulation just like any other public utitlity.

I'm all for free market forces being allowed to work--but no one seriously pretends that oil is a "free market" industry--pirices are manipulated by and for the oil companies and everyone knows it. So they should be regulated.

In any event, in the long run, this is an obsolete technology--it hasn't changed much since it was developed clear back in the 1800s. There are far better--and cheaper technologies out there to provide energy. And its time the government stepped in and blocked the oil companies from continuing toprevent those technologies from being impleented so they don't have any competition.

In short--contrary to the propaganda of the right-wing, the solution to high oil prices is to regulate the abusive practices of "big oil"--and give the free market a chance to work--force them to actually compete. Which is what they are really afraid of--because the truth is oil is expensive, inefficient, and outdated.

That--in essence--is what Hilllary is proposing. It's her proposals--and not the status quo--that will really allow free market competition and in the long run, reductions in the cost of energy.

And--while you're at it--look at history. EVERY time there has been a jump in the price of oil, its been under a Republican administration, not Democrat. So why should anyone continue to believe the right-wing propaganda?

Sorry Lee, fed gas taxes are 19 cents a gallon, my state is 21 cents a gallon. 40 cents from 3.09 still leaves it way too high. I can't blame taxes on this, the taxes fix our highways, I have no problem with them. And I really can't fault the gas prices allot with the price of oil. I can however fault the Exxon's of the world for gouging the piss out of us for imaginary reasons that lead up to this high price.

There's no definitive set in stone answer to your question. Rising gas prices very well COULD cause a recession, though it might not cause one. We need to increase our supply to get the prices down. People are against high gas prices and/or increasing our own supply, so there's no real easy answer for the problem.

Get rid of local, state and federal taxes on fuel and we'd be lots better off. The billions spent on the war and the proposed $150 billion would be better used to research, develop and produce an alternative to fossel fuel. In the alternative we could grind up the cars and trucks and go back to the horse and buggy.
