What is freedom worth? How much of your belongings would you be willing / happy to have destroyed?

I'm just curious what it was like to get "freedom" and lose almost everything else.

Now before you people get all over my case, I heard that french people in Normandy were irate over the American bombings and destruction. Shoot the messenger if you want. But, I think this is worth pondering.

Events...

Interestingly, many French did NOT fight for their freedom --- they betrayed American soldiers to the Germans.

So, for those people, did they want Americans to bomb their towns?

Odd how no one seems to recall that 100,000 American soldiers feared trusting the French people for the 1st weeks that they were in Normandy.

Many Americans died because they were betrayed by French citizens!!!

Can you imagine being a 60 year old french farmer and having your house and barn destroyed?

How is someone of that age supposed to be strong enough to build a house for him and his wife and a barn?

Answer: That is the French for you! The Germans drove tanks through every village and farm to get to Paris so they could burn it to the ground...And now they are angry at the folks that saved them!
They are only a bit less stupid than the premise of this question...Naw! This question is far and away more...
Heck! Just buy a mirror and see.

When you're weak you get conquered. It makes a mess.

Liberation makes an even bigger mess.

The mess is a good lesson in staying strong. The French won't be conquered anytime soon.

Not only have they armed themselves since, they are in the arms business now. Would that have happened without the mess?

Prior to 9-11 the US was realizing two to three attacks a year.
Since the mess of 9-11 there have been none.

The pendulum is swinging and the division is weakening us again. Maybe another mess is needed to reverse it.

I would prefer to live freely in a mess than otherwise in bondage.

Do you value belongings more than your life and the freedom to live it the way you choose? I would imagine the French valued their freedom just as much as anyone. The men who fought for their freedom I am sure valued French lives more than French possessions.

I know my Great Uncle did who lost his life in that war fighting Nazi Germany.

Where did you hear that!!!!

The French kept saying that Germany wasn't doing anything. They kept that up until the Nazis were storm-trooping down the Champs Elysees and occupied the country.

Then they asked for help from the allies.
