It's quite complicated really.
For the most part it is just a case of people not understanding why the alternatives don't work and why personal experience (which is how alternative 'medicine' is usually evaluated) doesn't work. Most people also find that they improve from taking quack remedies since most diseases resolve themselves thereby allowing for a natural change in the course of a disease to coincide with taking a quack remedy.
Those that use quack remedies fall into two main groups:
The first are people who just don't understand why alternative 'medicine' is mostly worthless but who use alternative 'medicine' for pragmatic reasons, those people will typically see their doctor if they have a problem and will quite happily take any needed medication that their doctor prescribes but they'll also take vitamin supplements and might take herbs if they've heard about them from a friend or the TV. Those people can be reasoned with and taught to see why alternative 'medicines' are a waste of money. They can accept the concept of double blind testing and the reasoning behind why it is done and also understand why anything that fails double blind testing is worthless.
The second group OTOH are those who are ideologically opposed to science and the scientific method preferring instead to see the world in a pre-scientific way (this also includes so called 'postmodernism' which actually pre-dates moderism) in which vital forces (long since discarded by scientists) exist (most quackery is based on vitalism) and where personal experience and emotion are somehow better than the most rigorous clinical trials. Those people can't really be reasoned with as they just aren't able to accept reality. They also typically won't use modern medicine and so often end up killing themselves and their children by withholding necessary medical care (some of them have been sent to jail over withholding their children medical care).

People are frustrated with the current medical paradigm because they do not want medication for every ailment. They want to be listened to and have someone examine and determine the root cause of their illnesses. If you look back in time - most physicians of the past utilized alternative health care. "The doctor of the future will give no medicine but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in proper diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease.” Thomas A. Edison. Even Hippocrates (from whom the Hippocratic oath is derived from) stated that "that the body must be treated as a whole and not just a series of parts" and "believed in the natural healing process of rest, a good diet, fresh air and cleanliness". We have made amazing advances in scientific research today however as we discover more and more we seem to be getting away from the important things that our ancestors discovered. There is definitely an important place for allopathic medicine, however they do not always have the answers to everything. Many people are currently seeking out alternative medicine and getting great results which has caused a shift in our health care (even coke is now coming out with a pop that contains vitamins and minerals).

It stems from dissatisfaction with what we term as modern “traditional” medicine. Current practice is to manage the symptoms of disease, we have even deluded ourselves to the point we think we are actually curing disease but actually only taking care of the symptom, and then the drugs and therapies cause other issues/side effects and we have to manage those, and so on until you have a large number of very sick people who were made worse by the “cure” and not even the original disease. So, what have people done? They are turning to alternatives that offer some of the same promises without as much of the side effects (I admit due to the FDA regulations many are not regulated properly and we have a large number of quacks running around, but I also feel the FDA regulations allow some quacks to run around in traditional medicine and do it legally! – so basically both have flaws). Many have turned to Homeopathy and Naturopathy with highly volatile results, i.e. very hard to prove much either way, and alternative doctors (Acupuncture, Chiropractic, etc…) I have found that basic common-sense approach to health is best – Nutrition, rest, and exercise are key. I have not visited the doctor in years and I simply changed my nutrition through improved/healthier diet, significant nutritional supplementation (the correct form mind you), and increased my activity/exercise levels.
Simply put, it offers hope where modern medicine offers more sickness…

I did cause for over 10 years I would go to psychiatrist, psychologists and even my family doctor and I noticed that they really didnt listen much but were real quick to prescribing me meds. The meds were doing nothing but maken me waste my life away from sleeping so much to being someone that wasnt me. It had changed my whole personality. SO I said the heck with this when I noticed the pattern with my 10 year old, especiually after reading how prolonged use has not been documentmented and there was no scientific evidence that the drugs may harm our kids and I was like heck no. I want my child to have a very successfull fullfilling life, not one that she is harmed over doctors not taken time out to listen and undterstand their patients.
I as well as my 10 year old have been on supplements for a little over 4 mths and I refuse to go back to old traditional medicines.

People are sick and tired of being sick and tired.
North America ranks 37 in medical disease management, meaning, they are masking symptoms with drugs not curing you.
3rd cause of death is drug interactions from properly prescribed medical drugs. This means every drug is poison, it just depends on when its going to kill you.
These medical mistakes have caused insurance costs to sky rocket and have made insurance unaffordable for most people and its continuing to go up.
ALTERNATIVE:
Homeopathic doctors study the body as a garden, not car parts.
If they are a good alternative doctor, they are well studied in assisting the bodies ability to cure itself. They study the cause of disease. Herbology requires extensive knowledge as drugs were derived from them.
When on a wellness management regime, like chiropractors, message therapists, supplementation etc... Insurance costs go down for the individual, because their track record of health and quality of life go up, and are not considered an insurance health risk.
Educate yourself with these books describing why alternative is taking over. Even medical doctors are embracing this because when they suffer from a health issue, they don't want the treatments that they offer their patients.
If you ask a medical doctor if they have seen a chiropractor, some of their answers will surprise you. Yes.

I my self use alternative care, because I don't like taking pills, and most of the time I can go to my Chiropractor, get an ajustment, and feel fine. If I am laking in some vitamin or mineral I can get those and take them without paying a fee to get a prescription. My M.D. charges around 100. a visit, my chiro, 35. you do the math, and I feel better after the ajustment, where I only have a prescription for something I don't need when I go to the Dr.

I don't much trust the doctors. I think most have been bribed by the drug reps. They overbook and don't take time to really know the patient. They don't care to tell you about alternative treatments besides medication.

Because, at least in my field, standard medicine is a spectacular failure at treating neck and low back pain. 90% of what is done is a complete waste of time and money and doesn't even make sense by "medical" standards.
Their results in many other areas of healthcare is not much better.
