The poor need a fair playing field. We need to give the ones who want to be productive members in society a foot hold by allowing them an affordable education, and health care. Sure you hear all the arguments about the lazy ,but the truly lazy will not take advantage of those opportunities and not use them. The healthier and better educated you are, the more productive you are . The more spending power you have, the more tax dollars you pay, A good return on our investment.

And it is he right thing to do.

I grew up trailer trash, not on welfare. my mother and father were uneducated and grew up during the depression, They both worked at least two jobs until my dad finally got on the railroad, then just one job for each. My husband and I started out poor as well . He finally joined the Air Force that was our ticket out, and we dabble in real estate to get a little further ahead he now has a government job and we do pretty well. I guess upper middle class. Oh how I would have loved to have glasses when I needed them as a child, it would have made school easier and the tubes I needed in my ears, I couldn't get until my dad got on the railroad. We then had insurance. I WANT TO HELP THE CHILDREN WHO DREAM OF SOMETHING BETTER AS I DID .

There are quite a few capitalists that know that tough love for the poor just isn't a panacea.
They know, through their charity work, that situations exist that make people stay poor through no fault of their own.
Its the ones in the middle, struggling to stay there, afraid of losing their grip on the ladder than need to believe that they are always in control, that it can't happen to them. They are the ones in denial.

During the Clinton administration welfare was changed to promote workfare, you have to show up at a job to get your welfare check. For some reason, maybe it looks better, people like to think there is still generational welfare, and I suppose, if there are generational problems, like mental or physical disabilities there is still that, but otherwise, welfare was reformed ten years ago.

Having lived on the literal edge, stared into the abyss and saw the 'poor' people there I can tell you that [most] are there because of the choices they've made. I have pity and compassion only for the children who are there because of their parents ignorance or stupidity and no fault of their own. Sadly, because the only examples they have are their loser parents and the utter unreality of TV [most] are doomed to repeat the cycle!

its not capitalists that is the problem it is the belief in corporatism that has been the root of most of our scandals starting in 1984 with the Chicago bank that got bailed out by our government.

a belief in infinite growth in a finite world is the doctrine of a cancer cell.

Well apparently the soft love the dems are dishing out isn't working because we have generations of welfare families. How long do we have to continue to support these people, especially the ones that are capable of working but just choose otherwise?

Poppycock.

In today's BUSH world, there are more than plenty of educated, white-collar workers WHO CANNOT FIND JOBS.

I recommend everyone read Barbara Ehrenreich's book, "Nicked and Dimed" for a wake-up call.

It is good that you have such trouble as it is a false premise.

Capitalists believe that poor people need to be given the fair chance to advance themselves.

The person who said that got her head chopped off by the people who needed a little 'tough love'.

If we believe in the market, the market can fail and fail people. What do we do then?

what poor people need most is a job.

the biggest impediment to them having jobs is the government and the laws that government has foisted on them at the behest of do-gooders who want to reshape the poor to their own liking (image).
