thats because babies are kinda like the elderly, they sleep in incraments instead of a full few hours. babies are just like that. for example, a baby could fall asleep for 2 hours, wake up for 5, sleep for 3 more hours and wake up and continue the same routine. there bodies are getting used to the sleep habits.

i dont know babies are all different. i have a 6 week old daughter and she sleeps all the time. the only time she gets up is for diaper changes and breast feeding, but i would say she probably sleeps a good 16-18 hrs. a day. good luck with your baby and may he be healthy and strong

You probably need to change how you're life is for a while so he can have the same routine every day and get into a good sleep and nap schedule.

Keep things dark and still during nap time, and start that dark quiet time at the same time each day. Slowly you can ease him into a nap, and eventually his body will get used to it and it will do it on its own.

Same for night time, make it dark and still at the same time each night, unti he gets used to falling alseep then.

At six weeks the 3am feeding is normal and needed, so dont try to get out of it.

Try feeding SMALL amounts of baby cereal-- it could be he's hungry. Some baby doctors don't agree with this, but all 3 of my boys were eating cereal (mixed with a small amount of formula) at a few weeks old, and all of them slept great!
