Greece was occupied by the Ottomans for about 400 years. Among many Greeks, there is still much animosity against the Turks.

Greece was invaded by Italy at the start of WWII. Italy demanded Greece surrender. Prime Minister Metaxis answered in one word, "ochi" which means "no". During the next few days, the Greek army and patriots drove the Italians into Albania. Had it not been for a Nazi invasion from Germany, Greece would have gone un-occupied for all of WWII. Today, "Ochi Day" is celebrated almost as much as Greek Independence Day.

The Greeks celebrate their Name Days more than birthdays. Orthodox Easter usually comes later than non-Orthodox Easter. Presents are exchanged on New Years more than Christmas because the church wants to maintain the religious meaning of Christmas.

Greece had a monarchy until the late 1960s. The government now is a parliamentary democracy. The Greeks demand their democracy. They invented it, are willing to share the idea, but they want it for themselves.

Prince Philip, the Consort of Britain's Queen Elizabeth is from the former Greek royal family.

During the height off the British Empire, a Brit, Lord Elgin, stole some of the marble reliefs that decorated the Parthenon atop the acropolis in Athens. The Greeks want them back. It's as if someone stole the Statue of Liberty from the US.

In the summer, winds blow from the Sahara in Africa across the Mediterranean and make southern Greece very warm. In northern Greece, there are 6000 foot mountains, and the weather is more moderate, but people do get snowed in in the winter.
One geological feature of Greece is the Vikos Gorge. It rivals the Grand Canyon in beauty, but not in size.

Greece is a great place. I shall return some day for a fourth time...not bad for somebody who is not Greek.
