Hi there...recently my boyfriend had a car accident, were he hit his head quite serverly.
He has now come round a bit but still cant speak as he still has a trackie in.
The probelm is when i go and visit him he knows who i am and remembers old times, but the next day when i come back and ask him if he remembers me being there yesterday he shakes his head in a no response.
Is this Normal in head trauma patients, or will he always be like this?!
Worried!!
Thanks in advance for any responses!!;)

IT WILL COME BACK LITTLE BY LITTLE, MY UNCLE HAD A SERIOUS HEAD INJURY, AND LOST ALL OF HIS MEMORY, AND MOTOR SKILLS, BUT OVER TIME THE BRAIN HEALS ITSELF AND REGAINS MEMORIES AND SKILLS, TO THIS DAY MY UNCLE CANT REMEMBER 6 MONTHES BEFORE ACCIDENT AND 6 MONTHES AFTER.... IT REALLY DEPENDS ON THE EXTENT OF HIS INJURY.....
GOOD LUCK!!!

It is quite normal and most likely he will recover to a great extent. Of course the amount of recovery will depend on the severity and the location of his brain injury. When traumatic brain injury (tbi) occurs, to a certain extent the whole brain is compromised due to the violent shaking and rebounding occurring to the brain tissue. Neural pathways are disrupted or broken and also the brain's chemistry is out of balance. When this imbalance occurs, the neurons do not fire reliably and memory and other abilities, like thinking, are affected.

As the brain naturally rebalances its chemistry, and neural pathways are repaired or rebuilt, brain functioning gradually improves, often dramatically. So your boyfriend's memory will probably recover considerably with time.

However, therapy can aid the recovery process a lot. Speech therapists who specialize in TBI can teach memory-improvement strategies. One web site said that at least 15 different such strategies exist, and can be extremely helpful. So check with the neurologist about this.

Of course, general physical recovery may need to occur first, and the "trach" will need to be removed before starting speech therapy.

Most likely the prognosis for substantial recovery is very good.

I had something similar happen to me. In my case, my injuries affected some long term memory, many I know had short term memory issues. In most cases, it comes back over time as the brain re-routes. However, short term memory is part of the frontal a temporal lobes in the front of the head that normally takes the most of the impact. Your boyfriend needs a team of therapists to help him with all you mentioned ASAP. Generally after 6 months you will know. I all depends on how much damage was done and how motivated he is to recover. He should be using a note pad to remember his meeting to write them down. Short term razor sharp recovery does not always occur. you should ask the doctors or family when you are there and make sure he's getting theraphy and losts of it.

Yes, he will get better slowly. Have patience. I know you get upset when you see them but it does improve. Thankfully.
