Hi all

Im 30 weeks pregnant and went for my scan on Friday. The nurse told me that bay supposed to weigh about 1.35kg (3 pounds) for 30 weeks but he is already 2kg (4.4pounds) Im afraid that he will be too big for a vaginal birth. Im so thankful that he is atleast healthy and big but I so much want to experience birth the way nature intended. Anyone had similar experiences and how did you give birth..?
Thanks so much!

I've had two ultrasounds which gave me inaccurate information about my baby's weight. In both cases they underestimated the baby's weight by nearly a POUND so I was worried that my babies would be too small.

Ultrasounds can be very helpful and reassuring, but too often they just cause a lot of worry when a nurse or doctor tries to make guesses about what baby will weigh.

The fact is, they don't know for sure and they are only giving you their "best guess."

So just keep that in mind and don't worry at all. Besides, the weight of your baby has VERY little to do with whether or not you can have a successful vaginal birth. It all has to do with the size of your pelvis and the size of the baby's head.

Women deliver babies over 9 pounds every day with no problems at all.

All the best to you

It's very hard to predict fetal weight, even with an ultrasound. Many practitioners err on the side of caution. If they don't and something happens, they get sued and this is why the C-section rate is climbing from a once modest 4% to 50% or more. I have found that techs and nurses have always been at least a pound off in either direction.

If you don't have a history of GD and things are progressing well, I wouldn't be worried about having too big of a baby. Good luck with your natural birth!

I was in a similar situation... my baby kept weighing in above average :). At 32 wks he was 2.7kg, way bigger than the average. Then at my 36 week ultrasound the doctor said he's 2.9kg. Two days before the c-section, the doctor 'weighed him in' at 3.2kg. Big surprise when he was born and weighed only 2.5kg!!

Ultrasounds aren't cut and dry in weight predictions, they're usually off by a few grams to even a kg in either direction. I wouldn't worry about it. Women have given vaginal birth to babies well over 4 kg, without any problems. I'm sure that barring any complications, you'll have no troubles giving birth to a 4.5 kg'er.

Good luck and congratulations! You're almost there!

Believe it or not- being overweight is NOT a bad thing! Yeah there's a recommended weight but it is different for every woman. It is not bad to be over weight when pregnant. It is very common. Doctors DO NOT recommend dieting or trying to loose the weight. Your child needs those nutrients. If you choose to breastfeed, you will burn more calories than if you formula feed. You will loose it all afterwards. Don't worry about that right now. Seriously. Worry about losing weight AFTER baby. All you can do is eat healthy and exercise. Good foods, and light excercise are highly recomended. That is what i recommend.

I really wouldn't worry one bit. Sometimes those measurements are completely inaccurate. They can only guess the weight from the measurements of length and other parts of the baby. I have known two people who were told that their baby was going to be over 10 pounds, but were born at 6.5lbs and 7lbs. Don't worry... they will probably just monitor your baby's growth a little more closely.

I'm 2 weeks behind you in due date and they haven't given me any indication yet but I'm really wanting a natural birth also. My cousin had a c-section because they told her the baby would be huge, and he was not. If it were me, I'd be pretty annoyed about that. I know we have to keep an open mind, but its hard to make our own decisions when we get so much extra information from doctors trying to cover their butts from medical malpractice lawsuits. My other cousin was induced because her baby was so big - and he really was at 10 1/2 pounds - but she was still able to deliver him vaginally. She said it was easy with an epidural (it was also her 2nd baby). I would rather be induced early than scheduled for a c-section. You have options, just make sure to speak up to your doctor.

Generally if the baby is getting way too big they will induce you a wee bit early but women have huge babies vaginally, so I wouldn't worry too much. They will ensure you are able to give birth vaginally, but remember the most important thing is healthy baby and healthy mum, whether you baby comes out the tunnel or the sun roof.

I'm experiencing the same situation. I went for ultrasound at 29 weeks. Baby weighed 3lbs 8oz, normal would be about 2.5lbs. I was pretty freaked out but I'm not gonna stress about it. Things will work out the way they are supposed to.

Hi! During my 1st pregnancy, my doctor did an ultrasound the same day he induced me (I was 36 weeks & being induced due to preeclampsia). The ultrasound said my son was 7lbs, 1oz. He was born approx 12 hours later and only weighed 6lbs, 1oz (but perfectly healthy). The weight shown on ultrasound isn't always accurate, just remember that! I had a vaginal birth.
