What you are feeling is your wife's heartbeat. There are some very large veins and arteries supplying the uterus and if you put pressure on a woman's abdomen you can feel the blood pulsing through these arteries.

The only way to feel/hear the baby's heartbeat would be with a dopplar. Only an instrument like that can penetrate the thick wall of muscle, fat, uterus and amniotic fluid.

It is normal for your wife's pulse to vary a bit between steady and fast. Pregnancy puts a great load on the circulatory system, and most womens' resting heart rate stays elevated throughout the pregnancy.

I had that too. Im also a bigger girl, and have had a previous miscarriage and I was concerned. But my doc said as long as there is no extreme pain and no bleeding, its probably fine. The uterus, which is normally sloughing in a period about now, is being signalled to stay full and keep plumping out that lining to nest the baby. The hormones are kicking in to start stretching, protecting the egg, making room, a lot of things are going on. And its all normal. Its a good thing she is having a sonogram but be relieved that if it was an emergency, he would have scheduled the sonogram like 5 minutes ago and not in a weeks time. So its probably just caution. I think she is probably ok but she should take it easy, get pelvic rest, drink lots of water, eat well and dont lift anything heavy. Congratulations!!!! It should be fine, Im sure. Just think positively. EDIT: Please dont listen to Shannon M, Lauren G or Jorgey. Shannon M, if the baby had passed, she would be bleeding profusely and cramping. This is not the case. She has had a previous miscarriage and now she is nervous thats all. Jorgey, you arent helping either. Dont put that kind of stress on anybody. There is no pain, there is no blood, just pressure. That does not signal miscarriage. And Lauren G, yes she is overweight but so is most of America. How is she less of a mother because she is overweight? You are definitely getting a thumbs down from me!

I have the some experience like you. When I touch my lower abdominal, I could feel the heartbeat; but I'm not sure the heartbeat is mine or the baby.

I thought I could feel my babies heartbeat like that as well, until one day I touched my boyfriends stomach on exactly the same spot and I could feel his heartbeat.....So that notion went completely out the window. You are probably feeling your wife's heartbeat.

It is probally more likely that you can feel hiccups. Hiccups are really common. My hubby could feel our baby with the hiccups while i was pregnant.
