The only one I don't get is #5...

All of those things are important to making groups function.

All of them keep the group from imploding due to boredom/anger/jealousy.
Groups tend to lose direction without goals. They would sit around and talk if they didn't have direction to take.
If they don't know their roles, there will be infighting for the fun roles or some roles won't be done at all if no one is assigned to it.

Off the top of my head;
1. Exercises should be tailored to the number in the group. Getting them to play scrabble, for example, would be suited for a maximun of 6 to 8 students, where each student plays an important role.
2. Clear directions/instructions allow every participant to know exactly what they're doing, minimising conflict between them about their roles.
3. As Above.
4. Aiding the flow of the activity if it becomes stagnant, or participants lose their place.
5. Making sure every participant has a role to accomplish (jotting down the points, searching for words, listing words used and their meanings, equal distribution of letters, etc.) so that every member of the group is actively participating in the learning environment.

Or something to that extent!
I'll bill you later!
