Stamp collecting is a great hobby. It provides a lot of mental stimulation and can be as social or as solitary as he pleases. There is a lot of good information, including contact info for local stamp clubs, at http://www.stamps.org That is the website of the 40,000+ member American Philatelic Society, a not-for-profit organization. And the membership of that group includes a very large number of middle-aged and older men. Links to specific parts of the site are below.

Another good source of information is the Virtual Stamp Club: http://www.virtualstampclub.com You have to register to post on the message board, which is the heart of the site, but registration is free, and they don't check that you are telling the truth, so he can be fanciful in answering the nosey demographic questions if he wants to. The people on this site know a lot about stamps and are very good about answering questions.

Stamp collecting has been called 'the king of hobbies and the hobby of kings," and I highly recommend it.

Why not build a model train set. I know a few people who started this and have gone on to build great models.

All you need really is a garage or enough space (depending on the size you want to build), a table and a fair bit of money.

You can buy train track pieces, models, figures and stuff online or at your local hobby store.

There is so much you can do in building a model. You can have scenery, little figures of people, lights and loads more.

My best bet is to go to: www.hornby.com and take a look on there.

Good luck.
