oil is what you put in you're engine trans transfer case etc it reduces friction and heat so damage doesn't occur

on an engine it prevents metal to metal contact on moving parts ie crankshaft to rod bearings

I am assuming you are asking this.

Oil does 5 things.

1. Cooling
2. Preserving
3. Sealing
4. Lubricates
5. Cushion


But, you question ask for uses... I can say to the only use that I know is that is used by engines. Electrical, Diesel, Gasoline, Steam, Gas Turbines, Stirling or any other type of engine that requires that oil. Beside that, I do not know any other uses for it.

I'm gonna say engine oil is used to keep the engine going by lubricating the parts of the engine

lt stops the moving parts from touching each other [lubrication] and also helps as a coolant
