And why do you think their grammar is so poor? I know that we're a texting generation but do you think it's laziness or illiteracy?

Probably for the same reason that people start sentences with "And", to them it looks right.

If someone wrote an appeal for help, with bad spelling and grammar, would you waste time scrutinising...?

I do not believe that it is either laziness nor illiteracy. The Yahoo spell check is not English but American thereby giving incorrect suggestions. If Yahoo produced an English version we might use it more rather than be irritated because the spell check cannot read "colour" "counselling" or the myriad of other English words. There is a clue in the name. If it is English, let us write English. Otherwise call it what it is - American Spell Checker.

firstly being bothered to use the spell checker. Most of my errors are typographical as I have big clonky fingers. So some of the errors slip through as the incorrectly typed word might still be a valid spelling... Spelling. grammar, vocabulary and punctuation were at one time taught as part of the basic English lessons at school... Whether they still are is debatable... Biggest reason I think is the decrease in reading, especially the works of classic authors.. As kids we didn't have TV, or computers or the thousand and one things kids have now... We had a radio and the local library. We read books of all descriptions. but they were all well written and illustrated all aspects of the written English language.. Also of course , here on Answers , English may not be the first language of the person contributing...

Laziness. People simply don't view it as important anymore. Besides, we're forcing a higher percentage of the population into long term education than ever before, despite the fact that extensive education for everyone is not conducive to an effective society. If everyone has a university degree, then who does the plumbing? It's clear that a lot of teenagers simply don't want to be educated extensively, and in the past, these people would have done apprenticeships and developed a skill that would serve them as well as a degree would serve a lawyer. Our expectations are too high, and thus we are constantly disappointed. As far as I'm concerned, there's no point educating someone who doesn't want to be educated.

It is both. Firstly teachers are no longer interested in spell checking so long as the student puts forth a pronounceable word. Secondly each of us has become lazy. I used to pride myself in spelling 99% of words I used correctly and challenged anyone to prove me wrong. However, Spell Check came along and F7 key on my keyboard is now my life line before I send any document/email off! It is like wearing glasses. The longer you wear glasses the longer you need to use them. Pretty soon one can not do without glasses so we tend to not exercise our eye muscles. The same applies to learning words, their meaning and usage. We have become lazy especially since our schools do not enforce good spelling. I had a teacher confide in me when I pointed out a mis-spelled word in a comment she made on my college paper. She said "oh, well, you know what I meant besides this is not a spelling bee test. I am weak in spelling because Math is my major". Lame excuse or what?!

I think, its because they want to spell things more easily.. I think they spell it (for some reason) by their pronunciation.
for example:
people here use "U" instead of you. That would be more easy for other people to pronounce it.
also:
they spell "think" as "tink"
I have heard from a book that they spell it like that so that it would be easier to type things and to make it look as if it was a whole new different word and other people to use that word and it would be a famous word. Then the creator of the word would be very famous.

thats all I know

As Petit Chou pointed out, most people have been taught that it's wrong to start a sentence with the word 'And' because it is a 'joining word' & should therfore only occure in the middle of a sentence.

You seem to value spelling & grammer above all else even though you make errors. (as do we all)

Reminds me of an infamouse bloke with dark hair who believed the only people entitled to live should have blonde hair & blue eyes. Very two faced.
