Well I think it would depend on the type of break in the first place. Generally plates and pins dont come out, they are there for a reason but if you are in pain you should definitely go and see your doctor. Your foot will be weak when they come out, they have been taking a lot of the strain remember. Physio or possible seeing a podiatrist would help with that though.

Usually the plate and screws can be removed after the fracture has healed - the hardware is just there to keep everything lined up properly until the bone heals fully. Once the bone is healed, there isn't any need for the hardware anymore. Hardware removal is straightforward but generally only done if the hardware is bothering the patient... sounds like that's the case for you. Best to visit an orthopedist (the one who did the original surgery, if possible), and ask him/her about it.

Lots of people have their hardware removed.

Try this site mybrokenleg.com

There's one lady on there, that had her ankle hardware removed about a month ago. She said it reduced her pain alot, and was so worth it

I don't know why the thumbs down. I've been going to that website for 3 1/2 yrs, while my son had a broken femur that wouldn't heal.

I know for a FACT that alot of people have their hardware removed. Check it out, so you can see for yourself.

Also, plates & pins were put there for a reason. The reason being is to hold the break together until it's healed. Once its healed the hardware can be removed. I know, my son had his IM nail & screws removed.
