At the moment I'm with a particular broadband which I feel I am paying too much money for and also the customer service I find is not brilliant. So please if anyone can advice me of a good broadband to use I would be much obliged. Thank you.

Try 'BT' I switched from AOL. BT has excellent customer service and reasonable rates.

You did not say if you were using cable or DSL for your service, so this is a rather broad question.

If you have both available, then I would look into using DSL rather than cable. The cable companies have spent millions running ads telling you that they are faster than DSL. Not true. They are comparing a half or 1 Mb cable line to the minimum guaranteed speed on the DSL line.

If you have the same rated line speed in DSL as the local cable provides, you will find that at peek usage hours, like right after school lets out and the early evenings, the cable system will slow to a crawl, while the DSL keep on trucking.

This is because of the dirty little secret that cable has done a very good job of hiding. The cable system is not providing you with a dedicated line to your house/home. You are on a party line with every other house/home on the street, or even on several streets. The whole area is sharing the line off of the switch that feed your area. So as more and more of the neighbors kids get home and sign on, you are sharing the line with more and more computers. This slows the connection down.

With DSL, you have a dedicated line to the house, back to the internet hub at the central office. While your max speed is limited by the distance from the fiber optic switch in your area, most users will be told if they are going to have speed restrictions when the have the line installed. With the DSL line, you are only sharing with any other computers on your home network, not with any of the neighbors.

Another thing that most people are not aware of yet, is that the cost of DSL service, which used to be outragous, has dropped dramatically. My local DSL for a 512Mb line is lower in cost than the 312Mb cable line. They will tell you it is cheaper to have the cable, but they do not include the charges for equipment rental and line connection in the pricing. I pay $35 for a 6Mb DSL line, and the 3Mb cable line in my area is $49. A third higher for a much slower line.

Hello,

(ANS) With broadband I personally think its true to say you do get what you pay for. Many of the large broadband providers like BT, Tiscarli, Virgin, etc tend to have a pile it high sell it cheap philosophy & so the service quality equals this.

But where broadband really tends to fall down is not in terms of speed or even reliability but in customer & technical support areas. With the budget or cheap rate broadband you tend to get poor or very poor or dreadful technical support. Often this is provided from call centers in distant lands where English isn't the first language.

**I highly recommend Zen Internet Ltd, they are an ISP based in Rochdale. They have won many many awards for quality of service and especially for technical support & customer support services. Yes! I'm not going to say they are cheap, but the service I have with them is extremely good value for the money.

**Support is UK based, & can be from phone, email, online form, and even IRC sessions if you still have web access.

**Zen internet definitely provides a VERY professional service as they are mainly known for business web service but Zen do also offer services to domestic customers too.

Hope that may be of use?

Kind Regards Ivan

Iv found BT to be the best, a bit more expensive than some of the others, but i think you get what you pay for. Customer services with some other company's has been an absolute nightmare!

No details of your country or city. If you are in the UK I would go with Virgin Media if you are in a cabled area. No land line required, and you can get discount bundles with TV, phone and mobile. Speed upto 20mb. I would avoid the ridiculously expensive BT like the plague, even though BT is a reasonably good quality of service, you really know you have paid for it!

depends where you are, some broadband deals offer faster speeds in certain areas. As for customer service most are poor, try looking at review sites to see who has the fewest complaints, ignore the glowing reviews as they are probably fakes. Also try comparing deals online to see what's available, some worthwhile sources below:

Go for ZEN service is brilliant, not the cheapest but well worth it for trouble free computing.
And you only sign up by the month, so they know if they don't get it right you can leave at any time, but you really wouldn't want to leave as the service is so good.

I f you are in the United Kingdom....Virgin are the best and I have had a few IP providers. All queries are answered almost at once, no waiting for a call centre in a far away country to answer. I have never had a problem with them they are the best as far as I am concerned.
