i now need to compile dos cobol under xp (previously windows 98). also printer wont print dos ?

you can try running it under windows 98 compatability mode, worst comes to the worst for printing you can use the print screen button to copy a screenshot that you can paste into a word document for example and print it from XP again

DOS is dead for this reason, among many others.

If the 98Se version of COBOL won't run properly within XP's "Compatibility Mode", you have no other legal choice but to buy an XP version of COBOL.
