My friend usually got about 350,000 out of his volvo diesel taxi,s.After this mileage some were using a pint of oil per thousand miles, and one had to have the head stitched because the driver let it freeze up.A good diesel will last much longer with the proper care and give much more trouble free mileage, there are,of course, always the exceptions.I switched to diesel many years ago and would not change back, you change up much sooner and use lower revs. There was a massive switch to diesel by European drivers which is why the tax on diesel is much more than petrol, derv is not as expensive to produce as petrol,so it is govermental highway robbery.

It's impossible to estimate miles per galon of any vehicle without knowing the size, weight, condition and other details. However if you are trying to figure out the difference between a diesel engine and a gas engine in a vehicle of similar size, diesel fuel has about 15% more energy per galon than gasoline. So taking relative efficiencies into consideration on average you could expect about 10% higher mpg numbers from the diesel-equipped vehicle.
