Huh. Never really thought about it really. I hate to label any country because it's such a derogatory term. Countries may seem to be behind economically, but have so many other things to offer.

The "first world" is Europe. The "second world" is the new world of places that were discovered and developed by Europeans later such as North and South America, Australia etc. The "third world" is made up of developing countries.
This way of dividing the world was made by Europeans a long time ago, and reflects the idea that Europe is the most important part of the world. Hardly anybody refers to these divisions today.

I think it used to refer to semi-developed countries - I guess former Soviet republics and Eastern European countires.
