The Ancient Greek Stoics and other ascetics like Buddhists and Medieval Christian Monks of the 12th &13th century recommended reducing your expectations, serving others, and minimizing your attachments to the material side of life. Aristotle recommended seeking intellectual virtues and living between the extremes controlling your desires. It is all good advice because these ideas help minimize your sufferings while maximizing your happiness while doing likewise for others that you live amongst. This is what the great philosophers and wise people teach. It is better to live simply and focus on the good relationships you create through caring responsible cooperation. It improves your karma, & lowers the stresses that are part of living in this world.

Thanks for the Q

I thought this was the philosophy category, but all I see is chatroom replies with no effort to connect to the subject in a philosophical way. This behavior is killing the category.

This makes me very unhappy esp bec the topic of happiness has been addressed by many philosophers through history beginning with the Presocratics and Aristotle.

There are 3 way to be happy. To see others happy and feel happy. In bad time must remember your good time and always believe in god that what he did is the best.

People are happy when they are "in control", that is, feel competent to satisfy their needs and reach their goals. Happiness is most common in societies which provide sufficient wealth, health care, education, personal freedom and equality. Happy people tend to be self-confident, open to experience and have good personal relations. Promoting these social and personal values should increase our overall quality of life.

temporary happiness comes when one fulfils ones desire, then mind looks for the next fix...one can NEVER achieve happiness this way...the answer i think lies in spiritual attitude to life...then search for happiness gets converted into a long lasting state of happiness!...the other way is to live in the moment...try to spend more of your mind time in the present moment..and not swing (dwell)too much in either the past or the future....just my opinion...

As long as you search for happiness you will never be happy.

There is a difference between happiness and joy. You probably want joy. Happiness just has to do with some chemicals in the brain.

Joy is knowing that God is in control and we're not. Joy is honestly seeking God by seeking to love our neighbor.

what i feel is take things in its own stride. Just let that moment pass. live through it. every second of a day to be felt and lived through. be content with what you have right at this moment. try to achieve more gradually. Make inner self always pleasant.. this i feel is the key to happiness.

Happiness- if you look outside you will never achieve rather happiness is something that you should look into yourself. You can learn and practice meditation and pranayam. These two yogic practices will certainly transform you. If you are interested to learn, I suggest you visit ishafoundation.org.

We can be happy all through the day by just passing out the day as our work to be done and laugh with others. dont hurt any others. This itself makes our mind cool
