People with safe liquid assets do best during depressions. Unless you are expecting the collapse of civilization, stocking up on survival gear is not the way to go.

Edit: since the job market is really bad in recessions , you should not plan to look for a job. Most people who already have a job do OK.

Save up on valuable things: Electric generator, Water purifier (with cleanable filter), Weapons for self-defense and possible offense. Canned and dry foods, Trade-able items IE (Blankets, Batteries, Plastic bottles for water). Learn a craftsmenship. -- kinda of end of the world things. But still useful when the economy collapses and money has little value.
