I think I just stepped on my rabbit's tail or something.I stood up to look for my rabbit and when I looked down, I saw my rabbit's tail in one piece seperate from the rabbit. I then saw her run off very painfully. The tail is neatly ripped off with a small bloody vein tailing off it. My rabbits bottom now has a very small (1cm) area of minimal bleeding The blood doesn't seem to be pouring out or anything. I don't know if it came off itself or I stepped on it. If I did, how could it come off so quickly and so neatly, if it wasn't me, then is it normal for a rabbit's tail to fall off? I am so frightened and sorry!

Its night time so I dont think I can find an emergency Vet. The bunny is only 2 months old, so she is still just a baby. She isn't whimpering, shes eating away at her carrot right now. I don't know if I could re attach the tail, its safely in a box now. OMG I'm so sorry.

It's called "degloving",meaning that the skin of the tail peels of like a glove. It happens a lot to rats and mice. The tail cannot be saved and you will need to take the bunny to the vet to have the rest snipped off,and it may need antibiotics as well.In the meantime,if the rabbit is acting OK,just leave it alone until you can get it top the vet in the morning. You could dab the wound with a bit of Neosporin.

As long as the blood is not spurting out of the wound she will be fine. She is young. She just will not have a tail anymore. She will be a very unique bunny to have.

Keep an eye on the wound, to make sure no infection starts. You can put a little neosporin on it but no bandage. it will just get chewed off.

It was an accident, noe reason to feel bad. rabbits have very weak bones in their tails. Things like this can happen. often rabbits can pull a nail or even a toe off their foot because the bones are thin. They get them caught on the wire or cage mesh.

I am more concerned that you are feeding a young rabbit carrots. At the age you say your rabbit is it should not be getting any fresh foods. This can cause diarrhea or enteritis in young rabbits. better to give a dry treat like Cheerios or a small piece of bread. Once a young rabbit gets diarrhea it progresses to dehydration quicky and is hard to bring back, they usually die from it.
Give a good rabbit pellet and hay for food.

I'm not sure why you'd pull a bunny's tail off...that's kind of inhumane...but anyhow...my old friend had a gerbil and she went to grab it (by the tail) and it accidentally fell off and never grew back. I'm not sure if that's the same for all animals but that's what happened to the gerbil.

Rabbits Tails

Some lizards loose their tails, but I don't think rabbits are meant to.

Poor rabbit. You need to make sure that it is not bleeding.
Comfort the bunny, it is probably really scared but may try not to show how injured it is as it could be a sign of weakness to predators.

Take it to a vet.

Hi

I get that you are sorry, but you should have called the vet. ALL vets have emergency care for after hours. If I had been in your situation I would have taken her there straight away.

you must have trodden on her tail as they don't just fall off and since there are bones involved it must be very painful for her. Rabbits will often carry on eating when they are in pain/stressed etc but that is a survival instinct. get her to a vet, no excuses.

Well, because you can't really go to a vet I highly suggest you call one!!!! It is not very normal for a rabbits tail to fall off or any mammals. Just call a vet!!!!
Make sure your bunny is comfortable and isn't in any pain.

clean the spot where the tail came off.
sterlize it with hydrogen peroxide and put a band aid on it.
call a vet in the morning.
make a good luck charm from the tail.

vet. now. Tails falling off are not really a natrual occurance and even if it was the vein hanging out of the tail means there is a lose end in your bunny. Go to the vet. Seriously.

VET!

Take gauze and hold it on the wound. If you do not have any gauze, use a clean cloth that you do not care about. Then take that poor bunny to the nearest emergency vet clinic. If you can not do that, then care for the wound as you would your own.
