If you go off road or drive in inclement weather, you need 4wd. Even though it is called 4wd, it really (on the norm) is only one wheel from each axle that has power, unless you have lockers or limited slip differentials.

4WD has a higher suspension and can drive all four wheels at the same time. It isn't really worth the extra cost unless you actually need four wheel drive to get through some really bad roads, more than an occasional mud puddle. It cost more to buy, cost more to insure, and cost more for fuel.

If you don't know that you need it, you don't need it.

It describes how many of your tires are being driven directly by the engine. In 2wd, your two front tires are essentially in neutral, but providing the steering. The advantage of 4wd is better traction, but at the cost of fuel efficiency.

The purpose of four wheel drive is to achieve more traction. With four wheel drive you can traverse terrain that a normal two wheel drive vehicle could not, like mud, sand, snow or steep rugged terrain. If you rarely drive off road or if you don't usually receive bad weather where you live then four wheel drive is useless.

4 wheel drive will be useless if you live in a suburban area or the city that does not get any snow pretty much. only time you use 4 wheel drive is when you are in mud, snow, or dirt/rock area.
