Perspective. I remind myself: this is an opportunity for me to define my character to myself and others. My experiences have taught me how to handle this so I will succeed. When this is over, I’ll be stronger, more capable and experienced than before.
I’m not perfect at this, but it has helped.

When I find myself in a very stressful or difficult situation, I tell myself, "The best that you can do, is the best that you can do." Then I redouble my efforts to improve or come to terms with the situation.
Oh, and I firmly believe that happiness is not a state of being, but a state of thinking. It's a choice. Focus on the positive things in your life and the things within your control, and don't give too much attention to the negatives and the things you can't control.

Think happy thoughts just like Peter Pan said it truly works oh and awesome music.
Dont breakdown, think about more important things in life then the sh!tty moment your going through at the present time b\c you'll find that its pointless and stupid for even dwelling on it in the first place.
Im the kinda person who wears a smile no matter how bad things get b\c lifes too short worrying about little nitty gritty unecessary bullsh!t.

It helps me to stop and pause in the daily grind and take note of what I value in my life - whether fleeting or permanent. Gaining perspective to me is really helpful: being involved with, and trying to help people who are struggling or are in less fortunate situation than myself makes me appreciate my own situation and put my worries in perspective. I think it's important to recognize that the journey in life can be difficult at times and to take care of yourself along the way. Having a exciting goal that I'm trying to pull off no matter what is happening in life also keeps me going and helps me retain that positive perspective. I've found a free motivation website called Sproximo really helpful for clarifying and keeping on top of my goals. It allows me to track my progress and I can review that when I get discouraged.
I wish you all the best with your life and goals!

All situations are temporary . . . . if you think that good times are constant and only interrupted by tough situations, then that's a good start to staying positive. Serious situations are not a bad thing and simply a stepping stone we must cross at times . . . they can be very positive if we concentrate on what we gain from them.

for the first time in my life... i want to give a serious answer to a question that interests me... good job.
to tell you honestly, i'm a big nuisance here on Y!A i give nonsensical and sometimes rude (if not nasty) answers. that's cos i get bored here in the office. but now that i've found a question i want to answer... i just ca't answer it.
i've been through tough times... my dad died when i was just 7, mum in 2004.. i'm left with 3 siblings. our eldest being the biggest loser of a bum i've ever known. our youngest (girl) is on the brink of depression... amazingly i'm the only one with a positive thinking. i don't know how i do it... maybe because i don't think most of the time. i just go and do something. don't think about it. hey... i don't know all i know is that i should be in a an asylum atm.

Lazarus and Folkmans Model of Stress and Coping best explains how you can keep positive and handle highly stressful situations, but it depends on the persons ability to handle stress and the task at hand.
Myself, slow things down, analyze the situation and be certain of what you are doing

You let me know when you figure this out. I know that I am driving my wife crazy with my negative attitude. Of course, I will not mention that when I am happy, someone will try to drag me back down.
I'd say the whole thing is a learning process. AND - you have to be tough and hard on yourself to be a positive person, and really pay attention to what is going on around you.

I remind myself of the words of Arthur Balfour (Prime Minister of Great Britain in our glory, glory days) who said: "Very few things matter much, and most things do not matter at all." Today it seems to be impossible for any scientific or medical announcement to be made in the UK which is not completely hysterical (e.g. climate change, obesity, Iran, credit crunch, retail property slump, etc., etc.). All this rubbish should simply be ignored. Nothing much is going to happen and we will dodge along as usual.
