I have a friend who is black and her tastes veer towards ballet and opera, K.D. Laing and Sting. She likes intelligent, kind people--whether they are black or white, and doesn't care for hostile, belligerent people whether they are black or white. She wonders how anyone who calls him/herself a Christian can allow race to enter the equation. Her (biological) brothers think she is cool, but her (biological) sisters torment her because of her tastes and views, and call her stupid, ugly, and every other demeaning name in the book. What's wrong with them? Could it be partly the "Cinderella" scenario, since she is very pretty, and her sisters aren't, and they're just jealous?

Your friend sounds so much like me... we have very very similar tastes....
Some people get that way because they think people like us arent being 'black' enough.... as if having such interests takes away our blackness. If you think about it those people are being kind of prejudice. Does being all ghetto, wearing pants that hang off your knees, not having a proper scholastic education mean you are black? Some people have really twisted thought patterns.

This is not a case of Black Americans being cruel to other Black Americans, it's people not agreeing with other people...but I understand what you mean. I think that it helps to view White people....do all White people get along just because they are White? There are Russians, Poles, Czechs, Germans, French, and many white races.
People forget that Black Americans are also diverse with many different personalities and backgrounds....Ethiopians, Kenyans, Nigerians...so just because they are Black doesn't mean that they are generic and must agree with everything because they are of the same hue.

I can't relate exactly but I have been dealing with this kind of thing with my family too. I'm Puerto Rican but I like country and things my family says is anti-Puerto Rican. My brother's the one that makes me feel the worse because hes so preoccupied about showing off hes Puerto Rican and "they're the best" that he forgot it's okay to be diverse. I've been told I'm not part of the family because of it and it's because I have many friends because I've been able to open up.

We definitely agree it's wrong, but I really don't know why a family would want to do that?

i certainly like an excellent style of what you published. particularly if getting protecting as an African American myself i'm picking to hearken to. What it is particularly all approximately is eu Imperialism, loss of morals in history, loss of appreciate and love for the writer. Now, you may comprehend that the eu cultures we are bombarded with dictate what's "widely used", "proper", "laudable", "alluring"... many don't opt to dig deeper or attempt to comprehend the outcomes at the back of in basic terms mentalities. those discussions might desire to be going on in our faculties. I stumbled upon this subject remember at present by using fact i'm on a container trip interior the rustic's capital with people who do not look like me. this is annoying to handle the exclusion or maybe 2 black Hispanics who've snubbed me needless to say with the unstated message "i'm not smiling at you. i'm not chatting with you 'reason you're actually not one if 'us'". i'm able to experience it. one among them is a discern of a infant on the trip and her husband is black. the different is the bus motive force.

It is most definitely jealousy. I think it's great when a black women steps outside of the box and is herself and not what society says she's supposed to be. How old are her sisters? It sounds like they need to get a life and grow up.
