I've always taken then but not sure what good they do.

The expiration date on prescription drugs is the date the company stopped testing it for stability, normally. Unless you have the raw research data, you cannot determine the true expiration date.

Everything these days has a "shelf life". That is why expiration dates are now on pretty much everything. They are probably not as effective... especially the prescribed meds.
