I just found out that a co-worker of mine moonlights as an escort. She says she makes good money & it's legal. OK> what separates her from a corner prostitute? Please don't tell me that she doesn't sleep with her "clients" because no man would pay for "just" a date. Why isn't this too illegal?

It's a fine line. A 'gray area'. You can't pay someone to have sex with you, but you can pay someone to go out on a date with you, and if they decide to have sex afterwards it's not related to the paying job. It's a way to get around the law.

It's a strange law if you think about it. You can't pay someone to have sex with you, but it's legal to pay a person to have sex with someone else while you take pictures or film it!

As for 'escort services', well I've never used one but I understand some of them are just that. People who have money don't want to show up places alone. Both men and women. It's easier to hire someone to pair off with for a big party or gala or something like that than to have a relationship with all that involves. How is that different from hiring a 'traveling companion' for someone who's elderly or mildly disabled?

Distinction from prostitution

While it is commonly assumed that the reason for hiring an escort is to participate in a sex act, that is not always the case. Some escort agencies derive at least part of their income from providing companions at dinner functions or similar events to which the client wants to be able to go with a 'date' or a 'partner'. In some countries, sex in the escort agency context is illegal (counting as prostitution), though circumventing such laws where they exist is the purpose of many (but not all) escort agencies. Also, even if sex for money occurs, the escort has a higher degree of flexibility in refusing it than in other forms of prostitution.

If the money is right, then escorting goes hand in hand with prostitution. Now their are women that escorti without providing sex but these cases are rare. Yes they are hookers plain and simple!

Escorts get paid for time and prostitutes get paid for sexual favors involving nudity.

Well, I guess the act is pretty much the same (i.e. paying for sex). But escorts are hired employees, whereas prostitutes are not. That's really the only difference IMO.

Ur co-worker is admireably very intelligent lady. If some body has extra money to splurge and he wants to use the money to ful fil his desires of 'company'. escort services are paid but sexual conduct is with mutual consent and hence 'not illegal'.
Escort service or guide service are legal services.
even if she wants to issue receipt for escort services it is legal, if she does not mention other 'services'

It's one of those grey areas. It's not illegal to be paid for "just" a date, but like you said, I doubt most guys are looking for only a dinner companion. The police know what escort services are and when they get bored enough, they bust them. I used to work for a large newspaper that allowed "escort" ads but the girls had to come in and place the ad in person and that was always interesting. Once the police came in and placed a phony ad under our "escorts" section to bust the Johns. I thought it wasn't right that our paper knowingly took money from the escorts and from the police, but the classified ads manager said we had to print it so we did.
