Dear Tinkerbell!!!
It is the same question I have in my mind, and in fact I have mentioned in an answer about a poll of answering by males or females,
I did not give my photo, but it is just shown by a male backdrop. But I do not ow many persons keeping a female Avatar or men and vice versa.
I strongly feel that the Avatar does not look like the person in 100% of cases. It does not even be close to the person too.
If a beautiful figure is selected as Avatar, it gives an appearance of attraction to the person, in the first instance. It may only mean that.
The real truth can be known when all the avatars explain the meaning of their chosen avatars. I have no narrow opinion on them, but I can not help myself, unless people tell us what is the real.

My avatar is me when I was 18 months old, my husband found it in a box about a month ago. My daughter is 2 yrs old and looks just like me, so I could pretend it's her too lol

No, it is nothing like me.
I made it years ago when I was in pyramids game room su and in IM with a member form Australia. The told me where to go to make my avatar, she did hers at the same time.
We both posted at same time and both were surprised we chose the same background and same type of clothing. Spooky!

I was wearing my Longhorns Hat... and I was just sitting in my room, when my friend took the pic with his phone...
Later I added some flames to it, and made it look like I was on fire...
cuz im hot... lol jk.
