My assignment is: Each student will read a technical article from a 06 or 07 Civil Engineering magazine. The student will prepare a one-page paper summarizing that article and providing a conclusion. I understand the summarizing, BUT WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO PROVIDE A CONCLUSION?

It's a weird way to word a writing assignment. I'd ask my prof if I were you, but I'm guessing that he wants to know what conclusions you draw from the article.

Basically, what is the importance of whatever was discussed in the article? Did it solve a problem? Could it? How? Is it cost-effective? Practical? The article should probably explain how something did or did not fulfill its purpose. Right? I don't know much about Civil Engineering, but usually a conclusion means you're supposed to make a statement evaluating something.

If the prof is referring to a conclusion as a part of a paper (you know, intro, body, conclusion), just be sure you have one. Wrap up your paper. In short, an effective conclusion will restate the purpose of your paper (often the thesis) and briefly discuss how the paper fulfilled its objectives. It differs from an introduction in that it can refer to evidence, whereas an introduction usually only refers to reasoning.

Hello, I'll tell you why since sometimes I quote sources and sometimes not. I got a degree from university so I am well aware of these rules. If you are doing academic research or quoting from an article whilst trying to give proof on an idea, then it is necessary. On the other hand if the question is just common general knowledge, there is no reason to quote a source. For example, if I say there are theories out that Napoleon may have been gradually poisoned with arsenic then I'd have to come up with the sources like Mr. Weider, the papers by researchers in forensics who studied his hair and did the analysis on his remains and perhaps quote or site sources who said certain members of his staff on St. Helena did it over time. If I quote their statements directly, I cite the author. On the other hand if I say Pearl Harbour was bombed Dec. 7, 1941, Lincoln was assassinated by an Actor called Booth at the Ford theatre, nearly half the American population is unhappy with the war in Iraq and James Watt invented the steam engine, Aristotle died a year before the library of Alexandria was built, or the Japanese commited atrocities in 1937 in Nanking, then then I see no reason to quote a sources. If every question, many of them simple had to be researched and cited like a theisis, I can imagine that very few people would respond to these forums. Regards, Michael Kelly

Based on what you have read, what can you say/what can you theorize/what can you assume/what can you imply/what can you establish about the the facts you have read in the article. To summarize is to give the important points/facts in the article, right? Then to conclude is to make a statement, a judgment or an opinion after considering all the important points/facts in the article.

They are kind of the same thing. The conclusion is the final point, the whole reason for writing the article. What was the main point of the article?

Write down what you think the article was saying in a quick less technical version using your words.

The conclusion is what you think the results of the article are. Or what you have decided about what they said.
