They claim at least one in seven secondary school pupils has tried illegal drugs while a fifth of ten to 15-year-olds regularly get drunk, according to the report.

Do you think this is true?

I'm sure it is true. I went into rehab last November for three months for alcoholism, thank god I haven't had a drink since.

Apart from my own recovery, I was absolutely amazed at the number of young people there (I'm 65), addicts and alcoholics.

As part of the program of recovery, everyone has to be srupulously honest about their past history, and I have met
dozens of people who started alcohol and drugs between 11 and 13 years of age.

So I urge anyone out there who has a problem, or knows a youngster who has, contact AA for alcohol, or CA/NA for drugs.

I think it probably it true. It's not a new problem, it has been going on for years. I remember when I was at school there were a few kids who would smoke dope and come to school stoned. Sniffing tipp-ex was all the rage then too. Lots of kids smoked, and several would skive off and go to the park to drink cider. It's not good, and I'd be devastated if my kids get like this when they are older, but mostly I think it's a just a phase they go through, most kids that do it grow out of it. Hard drugs though are a different issue altogether.

Tabbyfur, i don't know if its true but if it is, its awful.
How on earth can a 15year old get drunk regularly. Surely parents would know about it at least after the 2nd time? Surely they'd prevent it by counselling / confiding & advice?
I do think teenagers need to get seriously involved in Youth groups where such issues are tackled & nipped right in the bud. Our Church has an active Youth Group & its great to see youngsters way too busy building homes for the homeless, on newspapers drives & teaching poor people how to read, to even think of getting involved in such substance abuse.
Of course, we do have cases, but thank heavens, they are stray & few & far between.

Probably. It was the norm when I was at school and that was 15 years ago. It doesn't really sound like it's getting worse to me. It's just a case of youths trying to rebel. It happens in every generation though. A few end up as drug addicts or alcoholics but the majority are probably just experimenting and will quit after University, if they get that far.

I have a fifteen year old - and I'm sure it is true. I don't know about drugs, but my daughter says she is the only virgin in her group of friends, and she has also never got drunk.
She's quite popular, though. As they get older, they seem to settle into the work ethic though, as GSCE's approach. Certainly at age 14, for some reason, many fell of the band wagon, and that's when they seemed to high a higher rate of shoplifting incidents, drunkenness, pregnancy scares, etc etc.
It's our society in which we live that encourages this kind of behaviour. Poor kids. I do feel for them.

Yes I believe it is because of peer pressure, and the need to conform like your freinds.
I work in the medical profession and at the moment see lots of under age ketamine users and drink related incidents.
Its as easy to get hold of as sweets from the candy store and much cheaper to buy.
