He is and always be Kal-El, son of Jor-El. It's his real self.
Clark Kent is the identity given by his adoptive Earth parents. It's his real self, at least on Earth.
Superman is the identity he used when he's on the superhero job. It's his alter-ego, it's also his title when he represent both Earth and Krypton.

In the Comic Books that I read... Clark Kent was the True Personality. and Superman the Alter Ego. Think about the way that each acts ...
Clark Kent: Mild mannered a bit of a goof yet likeable by all. Showing Intelligence and other qualities that suggest Midwestern upbringing.
Superman: Bold Daring in your face, Take charge, and everything that you'd expect a superhero to be...
of the two Superman sounds more like the Stereotype of the American Dream... and Clark Kent sounds more like the American...
Still puzzles me how the guy can hide behind a pair of glasses and nobody close to him realizes that he's Superman... and get away with it since the '30s

Superman is the true self, Clark Kent is the alter ego. As Clark he has to pretend to be a normal human with out any powers. Superman didn't train to get his powers, he didn't get them accidently when he was in his twenties, he had his powers the day he crashed on earth as a baby. He has always had these powers and therefore has always been a "Super Man".

Back until the early 1980's Superman was the real person, a son of Krypton. Then after the Byrne revamp of the mid-1980's, it was revealed that Clark Kent was the real one, and Superman was the personae he used in public.
Even after this crisis is over at DC I think they will keep it that way.

Never thought about it until now. We are human and so in our view, Clark would be real, but Clark was not born on Earth and has powers we can never have or understand. His biological self is a Kryptonian masquerading as a "normal" human.
Good question, new perspective =)

Both, I think that some of his true self is seen in Clark, and some in Superman. maybe he's a third person entirely.
