And we have already socialism in the USA
Ever use a public library? Go to a national park? Drive on the interstate? How about federally funded student loans or grants? The GI Bill?
Been to central park?
Social Security? Unemployment insurance? Workman's comp? FDIC?
Socialism is simply public ownership and/or maintenance of social goods and services. It can be as limited or expansive as we need. In many cases it benefits everyone.

Socialism in which needed services are provided across the board is fine. Give the particular service to everyone, or no one. And if someone wants something more than the basic services provided, they have to work to get it.
That is how Sweden works. You get a package of basic services provided. But if you want anything more than that, such as a car you have to work for it. They do not pay people to sit on their butts.
Where the USA has fallen down is not providing a service across the board and we actually encourage people not to work. Instead of providing across the board health care to all kids under 18, we tied that service with the employment status of the parents. If you are a child of a working class family with both parents working, you are out of luck. But if your mother is an unwed mother who does not work, we give the kids medical care, extend it to the mother and give them money on top of that. It is easier and more profitiable for the mother not to work and in fact, if she pops out another kid, we give her even more money.
What we should do is provide across the board health care to the kids. All kids, regardless of the working status of the parent. Then we need to put people to work. No more letting an unwed mother (or father) just sit at home taking care of the kid. If that means the kids go to day care so the parents can work, fine. We could even hire some of the unwed mothers to work at the daycare, providing a more economical service and at the same time getting them off their butts.
One last difference between the USA and Sweden. In Sweden, girls who have babies out of wedlock are still looked down upon as sinners. In the USA we seem to have no problem with children having children. It has to do with the basic moral character of the nation and frankly, I think the USA lost it with the hippy pot smokers of the 1960s now being our leaders.

it's way easier to manage with a socialist government when the population of your country is small and mostly homogeneous
Sweden has a population of 9,031,088 (July 2007 est.)
less than New York city while USA has 300 million and a FAR more diverse population
But you are right, the Scandinavian countries (finland, norway, sweden, denmark) are great places to live, have good economies and are very peaceful
Secondly, how much more do these countries get to spend on social wellness programs because they can depend on the might of the US to protect them?

How many of those socialist countries are thriving? How many of them are successful at producing wealth? Socialism penalizes the hard work of those unfortunate enough to live in socialist countries, via wealth redistribution, producing a lazy population that becomes increasingly more dependent on government programs, rather than self-reliance. It creates a slave system.

Why are you so keen on socialism? If you must know why a lot of us resist the idea of becoming a socialist country, this quote may enlighten you.
A government big enough to give you everything you want, is strong enough to take everything you have.
- Thomas Jefferson

Well then you need to move to a Socialist Country. That best not happen in this Country. That is why people need to think and realize that Democrats are Socialists. But a few Republican's are too. Fewer less then Dems. I don't think the citizens of this Country would allow this. Hell would be raised!

Well Cuba is also a democratic socialist example. Would you like to live there? How about Venezuela? Or Chile? Or China? All of these countries have "democratically" elected leaders and they all have socialist economies. Of course I don't think it counts if there is only one party controlling everything and people force you to vote for the controlling party at gun point, but at least they're democratic.

In these countries they have police with AK47s on every street.
You make a lot of money, but the government takes it away.
Healthcare is equal, but not as advanced.
The government pays for everything, but it still comes from your pockets and your paycheck.
At age 18, the government tells you what job you are going to work for the rest of your life.
Your career is plotted out for you even earlier if you fail one test. Before you can get into high school you need to take a test, and if you fail it, just this one test, you can never go to high school. They have the same system for college... just one test, and your life is over.
If you like this, fine. But most people would rather have the freedoms this country gives. And freedom is a word that is thrown around a lot but what it means is you can choose, and people here like choice.
