I think firefighters are a very respectable job. If you are unsure why not look at first becoming a Rural Fire Service volunteer in your area. You still go through all the training etc, but not getting paid. more info on it http://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/dsp_content.cfm?cat_id=185 and a story here http://www.abc.net.au/sydney/stories/s744321.htm

All the best to you, friend, whatever you finally choose to do! FireFighters are a very respectable, respected lot in most parts of the world: have no doubt or fear on that count! They may not be the best among the well paid lot, but whether the pay is enough or nor, depends on you, your motivation, habits etc., quite a lot! You have the passion to do a job, do it! Very often your passions are your best guides! They guide you to do well, to live well, to go up and progress in life! Do the FireFighting job, and, if possible, continue your studies as well, and keep options open, while you are young: even if you branch off to some other job later, keep your passion satisfied, continue to be associated with FireFighting in some way or other, maybe as a volunteer or as part of Civil defence, or just as a skilled citizen. I assure you, you will be very happy in life, in whatever you choose to do! Cheers!

We live in the USA. My husband's a firefighter. It is a very respectable job. A firefighter lays their life on the line to save others. If you become a full time firefighter the pay is enough to allow you a comfortable life. My husband is a volunteer, no pay. Firefighters all over this nation (USA) are needed all the time. Good luck with your decision. As my husband says: All men are created equal, then a few become fireman.

Yes you can live alright if your full time, depending where you live some stations have retains, meaning your only paid while on a call out, you also have to live with in a certain distance of the station.
its a great job but not for everybody, MVA's a not a lot of fun, some people can handle it, some can't. there is no shame if you can't.
definitely talk to your local captain of talk to the guys at the rfs, there web sight is www.rfs.com.au, its volunteering but you still get training and a understanding of what your up for, its not all kicking down doors saving babys etc. its hard work both mentally and physically, but very rewarding!! go for it. good luck mate

Hi,the worst part of being a fighter is attending car accidents (wreaks),being a ex builder can be a advantage in regard to fighting building/house fires. It's a job where your mates come first working together as a team and can be a very rewarding job, working closely with police and ambulance men and women. It's all shift work and can play havoc on a family. My advice would be get a trade that would be an advantage that leads into fire fighting and join in your mid twenties with a back ground/knowledge,volunteering is also a good start.see links
