Should I sue my landlords???? and how?.......please read?
I have a problem. on september 20 my apartment was broken into and my computer was stolen with other items. I spoke to management and they said for me to do what I have to do toMy bf wants me to sue them I am a little hesitant because i am shy and dont know how to go about it. But after talking to his grandma- I am want to sue them the correct way. She told me to write them a letter satting everythign that happened and what agreements we made and also point out what they did not follow up on and to only pa half the rent and send a copy of the police report. But now he is calling me a punk saying why do I want to write them a letter- when I think it seems right to do what she said. I had to install window gates and a new door lock to ensure my safety and my unborn child. ANd know he is making me very upset and now I dont know what to do anymore. What should I do? Should I just sue them or send the letter out and sue them?

The window gates and new lock for the door cost $800. I realized that when you lock the window you can still pull the top window down from the outside of the window. The fire escape is easily accesible from the ground. The super has a copy of the key and was fingered by majority of tenants in the building to be known for going into people apartments and stealing from them. I being pregnant at the time had to do what was necessary to ensure my safety and my unborn child at the time.

Now the landlords sent us a bill saying we owe $1470 when infact it should be $670. I have rental assistance which sent them 2 checks in october of about $400 together minus my 950 rent deducting my $800 window gate and lock.

If you have a standard rental agreement, he is responsible for the cost of the doorknob, but only if it was broken in the burglary.
You are going to have to catch the superintendant stealing from someone for a judge to consider it anything beyond hearsay.
You don't have much of a case as far as I can tell. Maybe sue for a doorknob?
People sue too much, don't you think?

I don't believe you can sue them. First of all, it's your responsibility to securing your items. Make sure the windows are locked and more. But if someone is going to smash down your door or break your window to steal stuff, it's not the landlords problem or fault. I too have fears about being broken into. I have an alarm and soon to get insurance.

If the landlord did not approve the window gates and new lock and say he would pay for them,he is not responsible to reimburse you. And only paying half your rent is a good way to get evicted.
I don't think you have a case,it isn't the landlords fault that you were burglarized, unless he didn't provide adequate locks for the door. Claim your losses through your renters insurance.

I doubt a court would think that it is your landlord's fault that your apartment was broken into. It happens and your landlord cannot control the world's thieves. But you could try in small claims court.
This is what rental insurance is for.

it's possible, but very unlikely, the statute of limitations is close or expired depending how accurate the three years is. second, you will have to prove that the mold is the reason you got sick and nothing else in your environment could have done it, so if you moved your case is all but out, it's an extreme longshot and be careful, some judges who hear these types of cases could make you pay the companies legal fees

Unless the landlord was the one who broke into your apartment...I don't see how you could have any type of law suit. It's your responsibility to have renters insurance...which would of coveded your loses.

What agreements did you have that would have stopped any break in? I'm not sure what security measures a landlord has to have in place to cover legalities.

Your personal property should be covered by your renter's insurance.
The landlord is not responsible for your personal property.
