The statement is "it's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice." And yes, I personally agree. As someone who used to (USED TO!) work in customer service AND as a server, I AGREE.

It's important to be nice because
1) the other sent. doesn't make sense
2) they both lead to the same thing

It's more important to be nice, than being nice to be important.
The first is first-degree sincerity, the second is more putting on a false front or manipulative mask in order to obtain something of power/worth.
So if you're more concerned with your soul, you'd likely try to be genuinely nice, make it part of your character; if you're more concerned with your career, you might be willing to place getting ahead of being nice.
"Nice" has a somewhat unfortunate implication, as its root meaning is "stupid, senseless, unknowing"--"clueless," in a word. In either case, "it's clueless to be important, and it's important to be clueless" indicates the "wisdom," or the fallacy of equivocation, of this "folk wisdom."
best regards,
j.

nice.
alphabetically, it comes after 'mice'.
the definition of 'nice' is:
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/nice
1.pleasing; agreeable; delightful: a nice visit.
while some think it is great to be 'nice'. i think i would rather be 'genuine'.
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/genuine
1.possessing the claimed or attributed character, quality, or origin; not counterfeit; authentic
being important? if you feel important (hence nice to be important')...chances are that you are either an as$hole or think that you are better than you really are.
i can't stand 'nice' people. they are almost always fake, superficial and insecure. they HAVE to be nice because no one would want to be with them if they weren't. being 'nice' is their only saving grace.
being 'important'? well, people who are truly important never have to say it. it is the guys with 3" d!cks that claim their importance in society.
as for being 'genuine'? i have small group of very close friends. they love me for who i am and know that what i say to them or how i treat them is authentic. i am not 'nice' and do not have the need to feel 'important'. i could care less that you like me, hate me or want to have my children.

An old bartender used to say that all the time and he was an *sshole. I think we all need to be a lot nicer to each other.
