Glavine doesnt need $5million more. He has a chance now to retire with the team he made his career with, plus he gets to hang out with his good friend Smoltz and play golf 4 days a week. He never really looked right in a Mets uni anyway. Nice to see a player go for happiness over money. Plus with Smoltz, Hudson and Glavine, the braves should have a decent year, win-win for Tommy.

I gotta say I'm not feeling the pain for a guy who went from an 8-figure salary to a 7-figure salary. He spent most of his career there, so it makes sense that he'd want to finish it there. I'm more surprised that the Braves gave him that much money. Why not spend the same amount on a free agent pitcher who will stick around for a few years and probably put up better numbers? Why not keep Renteria instead of signing Glavine? Baseball is such a frustrating game sometimes, and although I am not affected positively or negatively by the Glavine signing, it certainly doesn't make sense to me financially.

Would I have done the same?
Maybe.
He's had an incredible career, so life is more or less now on his terms.
From what I gather, his family is rooted in Atlanta, and there's a lot to be said for returning to your home base.
And, make no mistake about it, he'll get plenty of positive PR from this move. His marketability, and media appeal will only grow. He's not losing anything in the deal, and gains some simplicity in his daily routine.
I would do the same thing, if money were no real object. Professionaly athletes often miss out on family. High divorce rate...
It may also buy him an extra year. A team is less likely to jettison a veteran when he's shown that kind of "cooperation."

These guys print money. When you have as much as Glavine has made, the money becomes somewhat unimportant. Glavine seems to be level headed, so he's probably taken good care of his money. Who knows, he may still own a home in Atlanta. He is well thought of in there. This is a life decision and the player does what he feels is best for him and his family. This also shows that Glavine really likes living in Atlanta.

It's always cool to see athletes use something other than money to decide where they sign, although having the financial flexibility of someone like Glavine makes such a decision much easier.
He's made well over $100m in his career, so he's likely not likely check-to-check. Assuming he has put some of that money aside, I'm sure finances are something with which he won't have to concern himself in his lifetime. He's a future HOFer who had his glory days in Atlanta, so it's not surprising to see him go "home" to finish out his career.
Would I have done the same? Given the finances involved, I'd likely say yes. Sometimes, money isn't all that matters.

To some players the game itself is more important than money. Glavine considers himself a Braves player, he wants to end his career there, and go to the HOF with a Braves hat. There are still some players remaining with class and Glavine is one of them.

This is really better. He never did anything for the Mets, except siphon $$$ from Fred Wilpon.
First impressions tell alot, and my first impression of Tom Glavine in a Met uniform was 3/31/03 -- 15-2 Cubs - 34 degrees @ Shea Stadium; and the last impression in September was even worse.
GOOD RIDDANCE!!!

It's really good to hear stories like this, but you also have to remember what happened in his last Met game...I'll set the scene, it was Sept. 30th they needed a win and a Philly loss so they could clinch their division. With Glavine on the mound, well needless to say 7 runs in 1/3 of an inning, I hate to say that he would probably not be to welcome back in Shea. Not being a fan of any Eastern team, just thought it was a great thing to watch...

Yes because Glavine was never happy in New York he lives in Georgia and wants to be closer with his family and kids who go to school in Georgia when he was in NY he rarely saw his family so now he is going to be happy and will pitch better for the Braves. I would've taken less money if it means being happy in your hometown rather than make more money and live and play somewhere where i wouln't enjoy playing.

In atlanta, even if he stinks next season the fans won't care because he came home to finish his career. However, if he stayed with the mets next season, every bad start he has would be accompanied by a billion booing fans. After his final start for them, I don't blame him for not wanting to go back there, HAHA.
I think both teams are better off with where Glavine ended up.
