Like any country, including the US, it all depends on high up the social food chain you are. If you have a good income and don't give the authorities any grief generally you're not going to have any trouble. Believe me, there are a lot of countries a lot worse than Cuba....particularly for a woman. Cuba became a communist state only because of the excesses of the regime that proceeded Castro. The Bastista regime did every foul deed you can imagine to the Cuban people and was considered a 'good friend' of the US because he was 'anti-communist'. Castro is no better in the way he enforces 'the law' when it comes to political opponents, but overall the Cuban people are better off than most of the 3rd world 'republics' in south and central America run by 'our friends'. Frankly though, if you want to move to that part of the world I recommened Costa Rica....a country of high democratic standards and unusually welcoming to Americans. I'd put living in Cuba on a 'don't do' list..it just isn't a good place for free wheeling Americans that have grown up under a liberal constitution, that until the Bush Junta, did it's best to protect the rights of its citizens.

Well, like anything else it's a question of point of view. Depending on what you want out of life - anyplace can be the worst because it doesn't provide those things. Some men think America is the worst place to live because they hate American women. They say so frequently. Those men believe that Asia or Brazil are better places to live because supposedly the women there "know how to treat a man". many men have moved to those places and report being much happier. I lived in a few different countries. I learned to appreciate some of the factors provided by living in the west.

Life is difficult because of the embargo, the shortages and the constant danger of attack by enemies of the Revolution. With that caveat you would be living in a new, idealistic society, with a more humane value system, good medicine and education and a very high cultural level. Don't believe everything you hear and judging by your questions you are both very smart and politically aware.

You do realize that people risk their lives to cross 90 miles of open ocean water to escape Cuba and come to the U.S.. I guess it's a great place to live in if you enjoy living in poverty. By the way get a new boyfriend before it's too late.

No it's paradise, just ask the millions that left Cuba to come here. Or try asking the ones that died trying to get here. Better yet why don't you ask Che, ask him about what a great guy his pal Fidel is, you know the same Fidel that shot Che in the back.

Yeah, Im with your BF on this one. I think you should both give the communist lifestyle a shot for a while. It might make you appreciate what men have fought and died for in this country a little more...

I guess it all depends upon what you like. If you want to go hungry, not have decent medical care, modern medicines, internet, and a lot of other things, then you will love it there.
Why do you reckon all those people risked their lives to leave? And, where were they trying to go? Big clues.
